There are multiple times of the year that we are meant to detox (or cleanse) our system. If you follow the traditional approach, you detox in the spring and in the fall. Or, if you know and trust your body, you follow a detox plan when you feel you need it. For example, a holiday away indulging on food and beverages that you wouldn’t normally consume.
There are multiple ways that I detox on a daily basis and today I am sharing my 5 favorites plus a few extras:
Lemon Juice + Water
This is a daily morning ritual that you MUST adopt TODAY. No joke. This process has multiple benefits. From a detox standpoint, lemon is highly cleansing and it helps the liver to eliminate toxins from the body. It also helps to aid in jump-starting the digestive process.
Apple Cider Vinegar Shot
This in not for the faint at heart but it definitely works if you really need to amp up the detoxification process. Get your hands on a bottle of unfiltered, raw and organic apple cider vinegar and start with taking 1/2 a tablespoon of it with water (add a squeeze of lemon to help with the flavour). It has the same benefits of lemon juice plus added naturally occurring probiotics that you get through the fermentation process of AVC.
Holistic Dental Care (Tongue Cleaning + Oil Pulling)
In this YouTube video I talked about one of my favourite gadgets – the tongue cleaner. Millions of germs and toxins are held in the mouth, particularly on the tongue. This inexpensive gadget (about $5) helps to remove most of them from your tongue. You’re going to be amazed to see what comes off!
Oil pulling has quickly become a common approach to detoxification, even though it has been used for centuries following Ayurvedic practices. This is best done in the morning or night using about 1 tablespoon of clean oil, such as olive, sesame or coconut. Swirl for about 20 minutes and spit out. (Bonus: It also helps to naturally whiten teeth).
This practice also has many benefits including helping to drain the lymphatic system, promoting digestion and detoxification. Ensure that you purchase a brush with natural bristles which can be found online or in natural health stores. Start by gently brushing in a circular motion, always moving from the extremities towards the heart. Many encourage using counter-clockwise strokes on the stomach area to improve detoxification.

The other ways that I help the detoxification process include drinking up to 3 litres of water daily to help remove toxins, sweating through exercise to help stimulate the lymphatic system, epsom salt baths, using natural products in my skin care and stress reduction techniques such as meditation.
